Black Sun Rising - A Firefly RPG

Could I tempt you with a little Space Western?

Black Sun Rising is an RPG set in Joss Whedon's Firefly universe. Though our focus has been on original characters, we are happy to consider canon applications as well. We’re on the smaller side but we have a core of dedicated, tightly knit players, a great sense of community and we’re active. The game focuses on collaborative storytelling, character development and cooperative board wide and individual plots, offers a gritty, realistic game world to write in, friendly players in a relaxed RP environment and we make sure new players are welcomed both IC and OOC. We're rated mature for adult content possibilities, we have great people, a friendly staff and we'd love to have new, enthusiastic and creative players. We have openings on a neutral ship, as well as a land-based location, and we’d happily add the Serenity for some good folks.

It's November, 2518.
The Miranda Wave has just been broadcast.
How will you be changed?

They say Earth-That-Was got all used up a long time ago. Folks were forced to leave or die, so they headed into the Black. Eventually, they found a small star system of planets and moons just ripe for terra forming, and they began to make them their own. It was the United States and the Chinese that led us out there; so the Core planets and the government that was formed to run them bear their mark. Ya gotta know both languages to get by now. The Core planets are the center of the Anglo Sino Alliance, but eventually the government and those that wanted no part of it alike moved out into the surrounding systems and colonized more worlds, some lush and green, others nothing more than an empty husk. But, there was some disagreement about who should run ‘em, and how.

A few years back there was a war between the Core planets and the rest of the 'Verse. Seemed a few folks didn’t wanna be ‘unified’ under the government’s clutches. The Alliance won the war, but their hold over the ‘Verse isn’t quite complete yet. Both sides thought they were in the right. Both sides did things no one should have to do, or can be proud of. And both sides harbor resentment, anger and regrets. Those who couldn’t stand to live under the new chokehold of the Alliance moved out further away from the Core to eke out a living on some nameless rock, or carve out a living in the Black.

Things out on the border ain’t so clean or advanced as they are in the Core. Most of the Rim frontier is a heck of a lot like the old west on Earth That Was. A mixture of old and new: gunslingers on cattle ranches and the rustlers that want them; horse traders and thieves alike; outlaws and honest folk working and living side by side with new tech and Old World know how. The Core worlds, well, there ya can find anything and everything, from Chinese temples to high tech towers to opium dens.

What it all boils down to is this: Spaceships, bullets, high tech and low, English and Chinese slang, rustic towns, high tech cities and bogeymen called Reavers. Don't go lookin’ for ‘em, don't mess with ‘em, don't do anything with them or else you end up raped, dead, and eaten with yer skin made into a fancy pair of pants. And if yer really lucky, it’ll happen in that order.

Got a ship? Then yer one of the lucky few. Stay one step ahead of the Alliance, and keep it flying. If not, do yer best to find a job that suits you, and keep yer gorram head down.

Looking For: Oh, I have all sorts of plot lines swirling around this head of mine!

Must recently, I've really wanted to play some original characters with in the Firefly universe, either just one to one or maybe even a group of three or four set up as a sort of crew out there in the black. The series created some wonderful landscapes and cultures, and it's a right shame to let them go to waste. So if anyone is interested in that type of rp, I'm your woman.

Alternatively, I have a weak spot for Simon/Mal. I love both those boys and can play either, so if creating an original adventure isn't your thing, but you're still looking for some Firefly play, I'm open to that as well.

I've been roleplaying on and off since I was just a kid, but recently took a long break to finish up my B.A. I want to throw myself back into it, though, but don't have another soul interested in Firefly to play around with. If anyone wants, I can dig up samples of my writing easily. Best way to contact me is probably through AIM (Hercoatisbrown) or just drop a note at my journal, which is pretty empty as of now. I'm open to rping through almost any medium - AIM, Email, GoogleDocs, LJ, whatever - I just want to find someone with the same interest, is all. Everything else is easy to work around.

Black Sun Rising - An Original Firefly RPG

Could I tempt you with a little Space Western?

Black Sun Rising is an original character board set in Joss Whedon's Firefly universe. Just a place to start, as we create our own version of the ‘Verse. We're on the smaller side (about 15 members and roughly 25 characters), but we have a core of dedicated players and we’re very active. The game focuses on collaborative storytelling, character development and cooperative plots, offers a gritty, realistic game world to write in, friendly players in a relaxed RP environment and we make sure new players are welcomed both IC and OOC. We're rated mature for adult content possibilities, we have great players, a friendly staff and we'd love to have new, enthusiastic and creative people. We have openings on neutral and pirate ships, as well as a land-based location.

It's November, 2518.

The Miranda Wave has just been broadcast.

How will you be changed?

So the Earth-That-Was got all used up. Folks left the place and found a small star cluster full of planets and moons ripe for Terra-forming. The five main stars have the most to look at and do things around. There are a few stunted protostars and a couple of failed stars too. Brown dwarfs with not much to look at, and nothing would make things around them livable anyways.

Few years back there was a war between the core planets and the rest of the 'Verse. The core planets flew the banner of the Alliance and won the war, but they don't have full control of the 'Verse just yet. Most folks who didn't want to be under their choking yoke pushed out from the core to etch out a living either in the Black or on a dustball. Both sides thought they were right. Both sides did things no one can be proud of. Both sides harbor resentment, anger and regrets.

Most things on the border and rim are lacking in the way of things that are high tech. Some are that way because their poor, others are that way because that's how they like their little world. The frontiers of the 'Verse are a lot like the Ancient West from America on the Earth-That-Was. Horse tradin', horse stealin', cattle ranches, cattle rustlin', bank heists, honest folk, all sorts of things really.

What it all boils down to is this: Spaceships, bullets, bilingual English and Chinese, rustic towns, and bogeymen called Reavers. Don't mess with them, don't trade with them, don't do anything with them lest you end up dead and part of their clothing and vittles.

If you have a ship, you're one of the lucky few. Get jobs of whatever source tickles yer fancy, stay one step ahead of the gorram Alliance, and keep it flying.

RPG

I'm reposting this, as we had something of an address change.

Also, we're in desperate need of Captains (including Mal!)

Took away our homes, our lives. Left us all out in the black, men without worlds to go back to.

All you need to know, boy, was there was a war.

Ain't no honor in that. No, this was the sorta war that ripped families apart, and saw planets broken and charred. The sorta war that left some men without a world to call their own. Both sides fought with their teeth, they killed without mercy, and both sides knew gorram well they were right. There was a war, and it turned into the sorta war no man ever really wins.

In his own mind every man plays the hero, the lead role with the whole 'verse watching. And maybe he is, hard to tell when there are so many bodies strewn about from both sides. Only way to know is to wait and see what history calls him.

Could be that a dust devils. Those would be Independents that can't leave the past alone and are stuck fighting ghosts. Certain soldiers never quite finish. The crew of the Cressida doesn't care much when they get called traitors to the alliance, cause they believe in something bigger. They believe they're doing something right and they won't let anyone take away their homes or their freedoms. The underground Browncoat Resistance. All they need to find is a dent in the alliance's armor, break them down and prove they were right all along.

Course those aboard the A.P.V Shènglì see it a sight different now. They're the ones patrolling the border, bringing peace and lawfulness right along. Without them, how would the medicine get out here for the sick, the help for the helpless who no one else cares about. Without them, there ain't no one to try and keep things orderly and safe. All they want is to do right, so why does everyone out here treat them like the bad guys?

Then there is Serenity. She's carrying with her the sort of secrets that could sway the whole 'verse, and all she wants to do is find her own bit of sky, away from it all. And maybe stop on a planet were no one is shooting at her for a while. Why is it always so difficult?

So the question isn't are you good or bad, but what kind of hero are you going to be? Who is going to go cheering your name, and who is is your villain? You can't stay out in space forever. Eventually, every man has to find his place. Some just gotta fight a bit harder for it, is all.

We're a very plot-oriented community looking for clever and engaging writers who want to tell stories. We're also a little on the mature side, both in terms of (violent) content and expecting our members to be mature enough to allow a more hands off moderation style.

I don't think they're looking for new members, but I thought people here might want to know that the crew (except Book) are all on Twitter:

Mal
Inara
Kaylee
Simon
River
Jayne
Zoe
Wash

Some of them don't tweet as often as other, but it's entertaining to sit back and watch.

Men Without Worlds

Took away our homes, our lives. Left us all out in the black, men without worlds to go back to.

Setting: 2518, Firefly 'Verse
Characters: Canons & Originals (All Canons Still Available)
Description: Men Without Worlds is a 'verse filled with cowboys and spaceships. Open to anyone looking to explore the black, so long as they can do it well, you don't need so much a working understanding of the 'verse as you do a good creative head on your shoulders. Just don't expect a board that's all heavily moderated. We're more open to member driven plots and long tangents of free play.

Every Man's A Hero

There are over seventy rocks up in the sky, each one a different sort of world and certain men are in the habit of jumping between them, looking for one that fits. In 2506, some of these very men wanted to united these planets and others, still, wanted to keep as far from each other as they could get. They'd stake their claims out here on the edges of space, they didn't want it taken away. So they fought, and they killed, and they knew that they were right no matter what happened. Even after the Independents lost and the government of the Allied Planets took over the whole 'verse, still they didn't admit they were wrong.

In his own mind, every man is playing the hero, the lead role with the whole 'verse watching. Only real difference is what history ends up calling him.

Could be that he's one of those dust devils, Independents that can't leave the past alone and are stuck still fighting for a victory. Certain soldiers, they're not quite done with the fight. The crew of the Cressida doesn't care that the alliance calls them criminals and scum, they believe in what they're doing and they won't let anyone take away their worlds. All the need to find is a dent in the alliance's armor, break them down and prove they were right all along.

Course the men aboard the A.P.V Shindgi see it a damn sight different. They're the ones patrolling the border, bringing peace and lawfulness to these people. Without them, how would the medicine get out here for the sick, the help for the helpless. All they want is to do right, so why does everyone out here treat them like the bad guys?

Then there is Serenity, who carries enough in her small bulk to sway this 'verse to either side of this conflict, and all she wants to do is get away from both, make some money, and maybe stop on a planet were no one is shooting at her for a while. Why is it always so difficult?

So the question isn't one are you good or bad, but what kind of hero are you going to be? Who is going to go cheering your name, and who is is your villain? You can't stay out in space forever. Eventually, every man has to find his place in these worlds.

One-on-ones?

I couldn't find anything in the rules prohibiting searching for players willing to do one-on-ones, so I hope this is okay to post here.

Basically I'm looking for the Simon to my Jayne, for a slash RP -- it doesn't have to be explicit, and in fact I'd prefer the fade-to-black if it progresses to that point, though I can roll with whatever you're comfortable with. I just want to explore the characters and the way they relate to one another a bit. I'd like something fairly free-form, preferably LJ- or email-based. Starting point and plotline to be decided between us.

Now's the time to join sunnydaleosi if you are looking to get in on a good plot! Our Blood Rush plot is just starting - when a vampiric sorority takes up residence on the UCSD campus, can the OSI Initiative ferret them out before they meet-and-eat the student body?

YOUR characters and their actions affect the world, the way it should be, so come and be a part of the plot!

Initiative members (canon or original) are especially wanted for this plot, particularly those of college age who live in the OSI campus house. We could also use some regular college students and professor.

We'd also love to see the following canons:
Riley
Giles
Cordelia
Oz
Angel

check here for the full list

and any quality originals! Come join us

Summary:
The year is 1998 - a government agency named OSI (think Initiative + Watchers Council) has control of the Hellmouth area in Sunnydale, California. The events of the the Buffy series never happened, but the mythology is the same. Join a world full of intrigues and plots, new twists on old canon favorites, and dynamic original characters! All we're missing is YOU. Friendly mods, excellent players, plots, storylines, character development questions, character spotlights, live chats, and more!

What we don't have:
We don't have drama, Mary Sues, post length requirements, purple prose, set 'ships', controlling mods, or pre-planned plot outcomes.

Don't know the Buffyverse? No problem! Since we're not following the events of the actual series, you don't need to know the show well to play.

Original characters very welcome!
